Treatment for Teens Using Drugs
As a parent, your teen’s safety is your number one concern. Teens using drugs are at risk for experiencing the negative effects of drugs, which can alter their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. The first step in treating teen addiction is recognizing the signs of a substance abuse problem, which include:
- lack of personal hygiene and/or declining physical appearance
- abnormally bloodshot and/or glassy eyes
- unexplainable changes in weight (loss or gain)
- dilated pupils
- increased absences from school, sports and other extracurricular activities
- spending time with known drug users
- possession of drug paraphilia (pipes, cans of inhalants, prescription pill bottles not belonging to your teen, straws, razor blades, etc.)
- acting irritable and/or irrational
- uncontrollable verbal or physical outbursts
- fluctuations in sleeping habits (awake at night and/or asleep during the day)
- behaving secretively
- confusion
- disorientation
- slurred speech
- continuously asking for money and/or taking money without permission
- poor performance in school
- lack of motivation and/or interest in activities and topics once enjoyed
After recognizing the signs, the next step in treatment for teens using drugs is finding the right treatment program and committing to it. At Recovery Associates of the Palm Beaches, our adolescent program includes the following services:
- Intensive Outpatient Treatment offers individual and group sessions available three or five days each week after school
